15th weekly classes (Tue11, Thu13 Dec) - Summary and Comment after class about "the extent of the 'extension of man'"

* This weekly summary *

This week is the last week of this semester's class. We learned about concepts of media we have learnt so far. After a student's presentation, professor gave us short summary about what we learned during a semester. It was what art is, who I am and the changes of media artwork as time passes.
At thursday, The 2nd international digital image forum was helded in Han Kyung-jik memorial hall. I attended this forum from 1 p.m to 2 p.m.

* This weekly my comment *

1. The extent of the 'extensions of man'
Media is the extension of the part of man. Books are the extension of eyes and Wheels are the extension of legs. The more technology develops, the more media people use extends the part of man.

2. Short summary of this semester.
Before 2000s, media art didn't open to public and remained itself. But after 2000s, media art exposed to the audiences. Also academic, cultural, social barriers is being broken. Anyone who wants to make a piece of work even if he is amateur, it doesn't matter. I think boundaries of all fields of artwork will be destroyed.

3. The Future Direction and Current Development of User-centered Digital Imaging technology and Art(The 2nd International Digital Image Forum)
I arrived at 1:00 p.m and listened to the presentation of Professor Kim Hyung-ki. He introduced some existing works and his own works. He explained Cyclorama and Panorama. I think he is interested in visual elements. 'A Regular Tetrahedron' that is one of his artworks composed his body and fitted to tetrahedron. Included this work, many works represent visual changes. I felt comfort because of immersion what I was surrounded in his works.

14th weekly classes (Tue4, Thu6 Dec) - Summary and Comment after class about "determing or determined 2?"

* This weekly summary *

We talked about opinions of Mcluhan and Williams, especially the difference between Mcluhan's opinion and Williams's last week. This week, we had a try to map Mcluhan and Williams. Besides, we discussed the many virtues of Saint Mcluhan.

* This weekly my comment *

1. Mapping Marshall Mcluhan and Williams
Mcluhan had an opinion like these as to a narrative of redemption.

Primitive Oral Culture - Literate Culture - Mechanical Printing - Electric Media

Mechanical printing was new technology in those days. Because of this printing, popularized culture started to emerge. Ahead of this, literate culture can be used and enjoyed by only the intellectuals. But, a content was passed by many people because many people must use and enjoy. In this process, a content was transformed. For example of drawing, a painting is painted by a drawer, passed to draftsman, carbor and printer. Thus, ancestors disliked and disrespected the mechanical method.
I think mechanical development is good to people but I'm against blind support about mechanical development.

2. The many virtues of Saint Mcluhan
We moved on to a discussion of three core theses that emerge from former ideas.

  1. the extension thesis
  2. the environmental thesis
  3. the anti-content thesis

Mcluhan thought that these processes were going gradually. He said that "The medium is the message". In those days, a content was more important than a medium. People thought that newspaper existed for only transmitting contents. But People started to know that contents is harmed because of medium itself and thought that we should fit our contents into medium to transmit efficiently.

These days, environment around us is being changed everyday because of technology growth. Thus, the relationship between system and us, people and people is becoming new. In the new internet environment, I think words is being changed because of messenger and text messages etc.

13th weekly classes (Tue27, Thu29 Nov) - Summary and Comment after class about "determing or determined?"

* This weekly summary *

We talked about the Frankfurt school critique in the popularisation of new media and different opinion of Mcluhan and Williams this week. Especially at thursday, we learned the difference between Mcluhan's opinion and Williams's. From that, central culture and popular culture are discussed, after that I thought where the interactive art is in art now and where the interactive art must be in art.

* This weekly my comment *

1. The return of the Frankfurt school critique in the popularisation of new media.
In the Greek Ages, governors said the word to civilians. That is, the way of communication in those days is one-way. In the 18c and 19c, there are three groups which are artists, viewers and theorists but they are small groups. In the early 20c, Frankfurt school emerged and insisted these groups had been bigger than the past. So popular culture started to emerge.
At this point in time, I think we can't divide those groups. viewers(users) can be artists. I can't see the boundaries of those groups.

2. The status of Mcluhan and Williams.
Mcluhan and Williams had different theory about the media. Mcluhan persisted New media change everything. That is, he saw the media is active. On the other hand, Williams said the medium is only the part of our culture and he saw the media is passive.
Mcluhan said the medium is the message. This phrase means medium is more important than any "meaning" or "content" that the medium conveys. McLuhan proposed that media themselves, not the content they carry, should be the focus of study, he said that a medium affects the society in which it plays a role not by the content delivered over the medium, but by the characteristics of the medium itself. There are many opinions about this Mcluhan's saying.
Also, we talked about the central culture and popular culture. Why is the central culture in center? Is popular culture really low art and central culture really beautiful art?
Only limited people understand and like central culture but most people like popular culture. Central culture has been protected by the upper classes and people study easily. On the other hand, popular culture of the public has been handed down by oral tradition.
These days, interactive art is being known well to the public but people thought interactive art is the low part of art. I think people understand that way because people can't encounter interactive art a lot. Thus, I think we have to get near to public with the interactive art more frequently.

12th weekly classes (Tue20, Thu22 Nov) - Summary and Comment after class about "dissatisfaction with old media and the discursive construction"

* This weekly summary *

We discussed people who were dissatisfied with old media and the reason they were dissatisfied. Also, we learned about discourse and the discursive construction of new media in this week.
People who were dissatisfied with old media casted some questions and we talked about the questions.

* This weekly my comment *

1. The question that people who were dissatisfied with old media presented
Jaron Lanier we already talked in VR class said mission number one is to kill TV. Actually, many people present dissatisfaction about the contents and physical things when watching TV. Also, TV is used to propaganda of political authority and people can't choose, people only get the information by one direction. To solve these problems, people need to construct discourse and improve new media.

2. The discursive construction of new media
Discourse is spoken or written communication between people, especially serious discussion of a particular subject. In this part, our new media needs to be constructed by people's discourse. Victor Burgin said object, theory, meaning has been formed through these discourses. These days, visual culture which includes visual contents like still images and videos is being formed thorough this discourse.

11th weekly classes (Tue13, Thu15 Nov) - Summary and Comment after class about "the middle ages and a sense of deja vu"

* This weekly summary *

We learned about history of new media overall. In the last class, we took the concept of teleology and modernist. In this week's class, We went back to the middle ages and the former. We listened to thoughts of various scholars. Deja vu is also mentioned and we talked about the memory from deja vu.

* This weekly my comment *

1. the return of the middle ages and the former!
Kevin Robins said that it is important to look into history to understand present digital culture. And we could see the history of movie and game from the view of Homo Ludens. From it, People saw the spectacle of panorama. After that, we went back further and met sophists of rhetoric. They taught how to speech to audience well. They did good work what enlighten many civilians but people finally recognized they had only the skill pretending the good person.
I think the middle ages started from 4C when Christian religion was chosen as a state religion by Rome empire and are finished at the Renaissance. At that time, because the center of world is god, it can't help but activity of human be shrinked.

2. A sense of deja vu
Deja vu is based on memory. But our memory is not believable and the content of memory is different according to the main body. Today, computer also does a role of people's memory part. But computer is only nomadic, it doesn't give any cultural impact.
I also have a memory that was different between my memory and another person's memory about identical situation. Therefore, nobody is right and nobody is wrong, so we need to respect each other's thoughts.

10th weekly classes (Tue6, Thu8 Nov) - Summary and Comment after class about "what kind of history?"

* This weekly summary *

We are going to learn about history of new media for next two weeks. This week is first week. We learned teleological accounts of new media and modernist concept of progress. We checked various opinions of several scholars about new media teleology. And at thursday, We concentrated on the modernist concept about new media.

* This weekly my comment *

1. Teleological accounts of new media
Teleology is philosophical concept. This is in antagonism to mechanism. Teleology is the philosophical opinion what all things in the world are controlled by purpose. The author of this book says all inventions like fax machine through satellite and mobile phone are instruments for use.
Jay Bloter and Richard Grusin introduced Remediation which is composed of im-mediacy and hyper-mediacy.
It is very hard to understand teleology. Several philosophers(Spinoza, Descartes) denied every teleologies. Generally Science field rejects teleology and explains a truth and a rule objectively.

2. New media and the modernist concept of progress.
Picasso is a modernist and Duchamp is a person in avant-garde. Modernist and avant-garde is different. Modernist still respects tradition but avant-garde do not respect tradition.
I was interested in the part of pictorialists. They worked to make a photo look like a picture because No one approved their work. But now Photography is a part of art. I think picture and photography is very different. They have been developed and will have been developing very differently.

9th weekly classes (Tue30, Thu1 Nov) - Summary and Comment after class about "Change and Continuity"

* This weekly summary *

We learned characteristics of new media over the last several weeks. In this week, We studied change and continuity between old media and new media. Before the class, We watched the movie ' Scanner darkly'. After the class at thursday, We listened to the lecture of Roger Palmer who is professor of Leeds University, and he is a photo artist.

* This weekly my comment *

1. 'Scanner darkly'
This movie is just not with it, I feel the movie is peculiar. They actually filmed and covered cartoon elements. Why did they make the film unreal? I think cinema audiences may not feel the resistance when they put the experimental image that they can't put in the real film.

2. Measuring newness
People view new media at the extremes of revolution and business as practical use. The first opinion is revolutionary and academic. The revolutionary thing is important in academic world. They chase the change. The second opinion is that new media need to be seen by a part of the business. In business, it is important to earn prompt profits. Because of that, we can not change rapidly and revolutionary. Thus, Continuity is important in second opinion and new media need to have the continuity with the old media. The new media which don't have continuity will be dead although the new media have a stunning technology.
I thought the old media is important part of new media. People hate a sudden change thus I think it is important to know the old media well.

3. Lecture of Roger Palmer about his photo works
He wants to represent the understanding, the part we can not understand and misunderstanding. He visited the region where cultures collide. In there, He tried to know how we can understand their culture and spaces. Thus titles of his photos is just the name of the region not the concrete one.
I saw many photos he had taken. Photos that hide view by frame and took the fragmented language was impressive.

8th weekly classes (Tue23, Thu25) - Summary and Comment after class about "Virtuality and Cyberspace(the characteristic of new media)"

* This weekly summary *

We studied Virtuality and Virtual reality in this week. They are also characteristics of new media. We learned VR in detail and I thought how we communicate the other or the real world.

* This weekly my comment *

1. What is VR?
Virtual reality is an environment which is produced by a computer and seems very like reality to the person experiencing it. PHILIP ROSEDALE who is the founder of 'Second Life' came Korea to address World Knowledge Forum 2007 last week. In second life, real humans are shown as digital versions of themselves known as avatars. They build homes and businesses, buy and sell land and have relationships - all through the medium of the computer. But I think the technology behind virtual worlds is still a long way off being ready for mass use.

2. The difference between VR and AR
VR is that the real object is put on the virtual environment. On the other hand, AR(Augmented Reality) is that the virtual object is put on the real environment. We can see AR when we watch football game. we can see the national flags on the green ground. I think VR and AR are another representation of reality but they make people do things what they could not do before. So Our quality of life is going to be much more risen by VR.

3. Two ways of approaching the VR
(1) Immersive VR is about our sensory and experience. We can feel touch and force from the Haptic devices and sense of sight by HMD etc.
(2) VR of online network is about connectivity and space. We usually communicate with other people in space which does not exist physically.
we will meet new technology of communication frequently Because New media is in progress now and perhaps we will be in state of disorder.

4. The controversy about the ID
ID is identity. I think ID needs to be just tool to prove myself. ID must not be human himself. Because of this, I think the problems of vicious reply appeared. So I am in favor in the real-name system.

9th Class(Thu. 10.11) - Summary and Comment after class about "Dispersal(the characteristic of new media)"

* Today's summary *

Today We studied Dispersal which is one of the characteristics of new media. We discussed difference between dispersal and distribution. We knew that we are in an age of major change in consumption and production on new media's age.

* Today's my comment *

1. What is the difference between dispersal and distribution?
Dispersal is already there. it is dispersed to wide area and there isn't the core. On the other hand, Distribution needs someone or some subject which distributes. In new media, we can see that the role of sender and receiver is being shifted continuously.
I believe that a boundary between developer and user will be ambiguous.

2. Dispersal in consumption
There were not enough devices to represent something to people in former days, mass media period. So men of former period had to distribute through mass media like TV, newspaper. These are an one-way form. But now, we have many devices to represent something we want to display.
I can see this system in winamp system. I think these systems like SecondLife(VR System) will be effecient and can make high profits in coming web 2.0 age.

3. Prosumer
Prosumer is a compound word composed by consumer and producer. This means that everyone can be a producer. But I am worrying that if everyone is prosumer. Our field may be gone. So we need to know much more than prosumer.

After class, I thought the problem of dispersal that we have to adjust ourselves to the standard.
And I thought there will not be a controller because of character that is dispersal in web 2.0 age.

8th Class(Tue. 10.9) - Summary and Comment after class about "hypertext(the characteristic of new media)"

* Today's summary *

We've been learning the characteristics of new media over two weeks. Today We studied what 'hypertext' is, the meaning of the 'hyper', the theories about hypertext and the scholars who mentioned hypertext.

* Today's my comment *

1. What does the hyper stands for?
Hyper is just above the surface and Hypo is just below the surface.
That is, The structure is as follows;

Above
Hyper
Surface
Hypo
Below

In here, Hypertext is floating over the text.
We often use 'on the assumption that(~라는 가정을 깔고)'. I understood this when I learned the position of the hypo.

2. What is the hypertext?
  • Hypertext is non-sequential writing. Although the Producer makes sequential webpage, the user approachs non-sequentially.
  • We get the information from the general text one after the other but Hypertext is the system which can get the information by the sequence what the user thinks.
  • Hypertext is the basis for cultural production.

I think We can't control users. So I believe We can make more various culture or media.

3. The theories about the hypertext and the scholars

We consider hypertext as the practice of literary theory. Contempory literatures have various format. For example, There is the digital writing without plots and We can find the books authored by many writers.

After class, I believe hypertext makes us free as we may think than traditional text.

7th Class(Thu. 10.4) - Summary and Comment after class about "Interactivity(the characteristic of new media)"

* Today's summary *

We learned about 'Interactivity' which is one of the characteristics of new media.
In the concrete, We learned these things : How the interactivity works, Differences between the interacitvity and the feedback, what the interacivity is for and the problems of interactivity.

* Today's my comment *

1. How does the interactivity work?
Interactivity is not a one-sided flow but what takes and gives. That is, it is an interaction between me and the medium.
I think the media like book, newspaper or poem can not interact. They just give us some information but We can't give anything to them.

2. Differences between the interactivity and the feedback
We call feedback a series of work cycle. Interacvity is the continuous relationship with the two main subjects.

3. what is the interactivity for?
For example, Companies categorize the customers who register their webpage for advertising to each other.
I have to give a good interactivity if i want to get the exact information.

4. The problems of the interactivity
Today, we have 3 problems of the interactivity.
  • Interpretation : Professor said that fragmented sentence's meaning could be different from the whole text. And I think the meaning can be mistranslated because of the cultural differences.
  • Definition : Definition of the word can be different because of generation, sex, culture etc.
  • Problems for Producers : Producers are worry because they don't know the habit of the users.

Interactivity is the concept which is hard to understand. I believe We have to consider interactivity between me and the media or between me and the another person across the media.

6th Class(Tue. 10.2) - Summary and Comment after class about "Distinguishing between kinds of new media" and "Digitality(the feature of new media)"

* Today's summary *

We've learned what new media are over two weeks. Today, We learned how we can distinguish between kinds of new media. After that, We met new theme which was the characteristics of new media. The first characteristic was 'digitality'.

* Today's my comment *

※ The kinds of new media are classified according to 3 ways:
1. New textual experiences
Communication with other world could be possible by text in real-time. I think these changes of text from book or newspaper are important.
2. New ways of representing the world
In old times and now, people use painting or photograph to represent the real world. And These days, we can experience VR(Virtual Reality). The ways of representing the world have been changing to the three-dimensional representation but I believe the plane representation won't disappear because of the pleasure of imagination.
3. New Relationship between subject and media

※ New theme : Digital!!
1. What does digital mean?
Digital is that the physical properties are changed to binary numeric forms. So Digital need sampling, Quantization and Encoding.
2. The differences of Analogue and Digital
Analogue is the continual thing and Digital is the discerte thing.

People think Digital media of New media because of the rapid growth of computer technology but I think Digital is a kind of New media because People represent their thought by using Digital like computer.

5th Class(Thu. 9.27) - Summary and Comment after class about "Non-technical and inclusive" concepts of "New"

"Motivation to generate culture"

We are learning about 'New' and 'New Media' from last week. Today we learned 'Non-technical and inclusive' concepts of 'New'. This concept is new character of new media.

Most People think Digital media is New media but That is a slice of it. I thought Digital is also kind of medium(media).

Today's main subject is that 'New' media include everything. Old people used 'pure medium' that is used to original use ranges to hold down categorized compartment like feudal society. After that some people tried to use different purpose from the original. They called it 'intermedium'. Today pure medium and intermedium have been integrated to "New Media".

I thought like this after class. "Stop contending what pure medium is and what intermedium is, then Open the horizen of new culture with New Media".

4th Class(Thu. 9.20) - Summary and Comment after class Thinking of 'NEW'

We had time to think of meaning of 'NEW' and watched DVD named da Vinci's Project made by KBS in class. New has the meaning of 'betters', 'Cutting-edge', 'forward-thinking' etc. I think 'new' is better, more state-of-the-art than 'old' because it has the character of exploration to unknown world.
After discussion on New, We watched DVD about European viewpoint on Art. The title is 'da Vinci's project'. I saw Europeans who are trying to combine 'art' and 'science' and importance of Art education. I think that Children receive various education and must not be hemiplegia of education.

3rd Class(Tue. 9.18) - Summary and Comment after class learning roughly about New Media and history of New Media

We learned Old media through New Media, especially about history of Media. 'Media' is plural noun and plural of 'medium'. Professor accounted for 'medium' by using a case. In old times, People painted using pouder and needed to use the white of an egg in order to paint on the wooden part or cotton. In here, We can even think of the white of an egg as a medium. These days We have an understanding that things like newspaper, TV are medium or Mass media. Therefore We call 'medium' or 'media' things that can let us communicate.

New Media appeared approximately 1960s. A few World War ended, A Cold War was Started. Decentralization of established and centralized geo-political orders was started after imperialism disappeared. So People wanted diversity of culture and philosophy etc and saw many changes because of many immigrants. New media was created in this stream. The invention of computer had New media developed much faster.

2nd Class(Tue 9.11) - Comment after class titled Background and history of media aesthetics

we learned what art is and aesthetics is roughly. People started thinking of Art from western Philosophy. Eastern doesn't have many assets of art and philosophy. That's the part we have to grow.
Professor introduced many scholars from Plato(Socrates) to Derrida and what they thought. The aesthetics became a destination of new thinking instead of philosophy by Hegel.
A philosopher who gave me deep impression of many introduced philosopher is David Hume. He mentioned concepts of 'taste', 'perception', 'cognition'. I understood Perception is a kind of emotion that you can feel after recognition and Cognition is the phase of recognition(perception).
I thought I need a quiet attitude for understanding philosophy and art and knowledge to persuade people who try to deny 'New Media' after class.

1st Class(Tue. 9.4) - Sentiments after watching two video clips

I just saw two videos that have been linked in our class's webpage. First video is 'the truly soft side of software' that is filmed by Golan Levin at Feb 2004. Golan Levin is software engineer and I think he's English or lives in England because he said that you can visit me in Chelsea.
He uses mouse and pen on touch pad. His performance is called "Scribble". He scribbles then some sound comes out.
I heard bounce sound in the most part of the beginning. Things that looks like a cell or Blood vessel was seen.
In the middle part of the video, I saw and heard an adventure of a glimmer with some wind sound like a whistling sound. his adventure lets me think space wandering of Dooli who is a hero in a cartoon film.
In the last part of the video, I saw gradually more and more glimmers. I thought that is the course of finding friends in human society.

Second video is 'the Glove' that is made by Beer and Smokes and Mark Walling Film. But it was too much stopped repeatedly and finally video was stopped ever. So I couln't see the whole of the video. I only saw 3 minutes. In the first of the video, a skeleton moved and found some roads in a maze colored by red background. After that, a guy visited a place where looks like a store. visitor gave a parcel to store owner and the parcel was bright.
I couldn't see the whole video and know this video's story. But I want to know this story, so later I will try to see 'the Glove' again.

1st Class(Tue. 9.4) - First Class of Media aesthetics

I made this blog on Tuesday and am in.
